New Orleans Charter Science and Math “Sci High” Students Win Big at Greater New Orleans and Louisiana Science and Engineering Fairs 

New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School “Sci High” is pleased to announce the following five winners at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair:
First Place, Biochemistry: Delia Pirtle for "Which Sunscreen and SPF has the biggest effect on Freshwater Hydra? "
Second Place, Energy: Sustainable Materials And Design: Otis Taylor & Chelsy Gonzalez for "Bringing Insulation to the 21st Century"
Third Place, Translational Medical Science: Bryson White for  "Is blinking frequency affected by screen exposure?"
Fourth Place, Computational Biology: Staicy Triminio-Ferrera for "Twins birth in the United States"

Sci High students won 12 Awards at the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair prior:
Six Sci High students qualified for the state competition by winning 1st or 2nd place awards. First place student awards include: Derrick O’Neal, Animal Sciences for “Does color affect mosquito oviposition site selection?”; Delia Pirtle, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology for "Which Sunscreen and SPF has the biggest effect on Freshwater Hydra?" and Otis Taylor and Chelsy Gonzales,  Energy: Sustainable Materials and Design for “Bringing Insulation to the 21st Century.”
Second place winners include: Staicy Triminio-Ferrera, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Biomedical Engineering for “Twin births in the United States”; and Bryson White: Biomedical, Health & Translational Medical Science for "Is blinking frequency affected by screen exposure?"
Other student awards include 3rd place winner Eviyan Butler for Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Biomedical Engineering for “COVID-19 and unclean air: is it dangerous for asthma carriers?”
The 4th place winners include Kawaynea Washington, Behavioral and Social Sciences for “The effects of whitewashing/diversity in film”;  Cullun Mitchell, Engineering Mechanics for “Captivating Entertainment”; Amaya Jacques, Biomedical, Health & Translational Medical Science for “Can the PTC Test Predict Symptoms of COVID-19?”; Selina Langley, Animal Sciences for “COVID-19 Pet Adoption”; and Samaria Smothers, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Biomedical Engineering for “Comparing the global impacts of a pandemic on unemployment and CO2 emissions.”
Sci High Special Award winners for the Science Fair:
OTIS TAYLOR AND CHELSY GONZALEZ: U.S. Air Force (National) AwardAwards given to projects that best incorporate the studies of math, sciences and engineering and when possible, recognize projects that offer Air Force applicability.
OTIS TAYLOR AND CHELSY GONZALEZ M.S. Benbow & Associates First prize-$100 for outstanding Senior Division investigative projects in the field of Electrical Engineering.
SAMARIA SMOTHERS: Tulane Science Scholars ProgramThe Tulane Science Scholars Program (TSSP) offers a certificate and a full scholarship worth $1700 for a summer course to a 10th or 11th grade student who has an exceptional project in an area of science or engineering.  The TSSP is a selective program for rising juniors or seniors who have exceptional talent in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. SAMARIA SMOTHERS-U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Science Champion Awards recognize an exceptional individual student or team project exhibiting at the fair that has the potential to make an impact on addressing international development challenges. This recognition is given to the most outstanding project with relevance to solving an important global development challenge.  
CHELSY GONZALEZ: Entergy Corporation ”Powering the Future” Scholarship $1,000 scholarship awarded to a female, high school senior with an outstanding, promising project, upon presentation of their acceptance letter into a college or university.
DELIA PIRTLE: The “Aspiring Researcher” Scholarship presented by the Emmy Noether Awards A $2,500 undergraduate scholarship awarded to a high school female that demonstrates passion and promise for scientific research. For more information: https://www.thebrownfoundation.org/emmy-noether-award.html
