Teacher Spotlight: Hynes Teacher Alexandra Mossing Awarded for Excellence in TeachingHynes Charter Middle School Social Studies Teacher Alexandra Mossing is passionate about building informed, responsible, and proactive citizens through education. “I am a firm believer that quality education can change the world,” says Alex. Her students and colleagues gush about her dedication and uncanny ability to make learning interesting and fun, and she is truly loved and appreciated by all who are privileged to have had her as a teacher, says Hynes CEO Dr. Michelle Douglas.Alex’s passion has not gone unnoticed. On May 5, NOLA Public School (NOLA-PS) Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr., Hynes CEO, Dr. Michelle Douglas and other staff honored Alex as one of fifteen semifinalists for the 2020 New Orleans Excellence in Teaching Award (NOETA). Alex was surprised with a social distancing visit to her home that included the delivery of a special lawn sign to recognize award winners for their outstanding work as Orleans Parish educators. “Mrs. Mossing inspires her students to surpass their own expectations,” said Anne Kramer, Principal of Hynes Charter School Lakeview. “I have seen firsthand how she makes learning Social Studies content come alive through debate, discourse, and simulations. These authentic lessons bring out the best in her students.”A native New Orleanian, Alex has taught 5-8th grade social studies and ELA to the students of New Orleans for nearly a decade, while also serving as a Teacher Leader and Coach. She is certified in secondary education through Tulane University and is currently enrolled as a candidate for a Master of Educational Leadership degree at UNO. She graduated from the University of Mississippi Honors College with a BA in International Studies and Spanish.“I cannot adequately express how honored I am to be recognized for my work teaching the students of New Orleans, “ said Alex. “My most important goal in life is to be the best teacher I can be, because it’s the surest way I can think of to have a meaningful impact on the world. When I think of the hundreds of students who have been a part of my classroom over the years, I am humbled and overwhelmed by the opportunity I have every day to interact with the future, and I am filled with hope for what our world can become.”The NOETA Award was created in 2015 by New Schools for New Orleans. In the fall of 2018, NOLA-PS took over the planning and execution of the program to help honor more outstanding teachers throughout New Orleans public schools. School leaders, teachers, coaches and other academic or cultural leaders at any New Orleans area public school or network were eligible to nominate exceptional teachers for this citywide award.
