Good Afternoon,

I am writing to let you know that we are taking applications for the Nancy M. Marsiglia Institute of Justice now.  The spring semester is a great opportunity for you to nominate folks who you know to be interested in advocacy and public policy or thinking about applying to law school.
One benefit to taking the class this spring is the grant we received from the Packard Foundation that allows us to offer full scholarships this semester to assure diversity by age, gender, race, income and thought—— It is unnecessary, but we hope that participants will want to pay something forward to United Way to help defray the costs.  Ordinarily this class is offered for $750.
Another reason for signing up this spring are the positive benefits of ZOOM.  In addition to lectures, there will be breakout room discussions and guest speakers.  We have already lined up two national celebrities --- Kristin Clarke from the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and Christopher R. Riano from the Center for Civic Education.   Martha Lemoine our teacher  is in the process of reaching out to local people as well.   Judge Stephen Higginson, Clancy DuBos and Raphael Cassimere are scheduled.  No doubt there will be one or two Landrieu siblings adding their voice.  Also although the class size is limited to 20 people, folks from all over Louisiana can apply to zoom in.
Please feel to blast the attachment or to speak directly to those who might be interested.   This is a great opportunity for people to meet each other and to begin a civil conversation with regard to public debate.
Here is the link to the application.  https://www.unitedwaysela.org/marsiglia-institute-spring-2021-application
Have a happy holiday season.  Stay positive.  Test negative.
Madalyn

| Civil discourse is the backbone of democracy – and increasingly scarce in our divided country. If you'd like to be part of the solution to reclaiming civil discourse, I invite you to apply to join the Nancy M. Marsiglia Institute of Justice spring 2021 class.   The Marsiglia Institute is presented by Loyola University New Orleans College of Law and United Way of Southeast Louisiana. Held virtually this semester, the course brings together a diverse group of people to better understand U.S. government and supercharge their civic engagement. It's ideal for anyone interested in how the Constitution's interpretation impacts today's pressing issues, from social justice to immigration.   The Institute's Thursday evening classes are engaging and discussion-based. They also frequently feature guest presentations by notable subject matter experts. Past presenters include former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, Walter Isaacson, Bob Mann, Judge Stephen Higginson, and others.   We are excited to offer multiple full scholarships for the Marsiglia Institute this semester. Applications are open through Jan. 2, 2021. Learn more and apply here.  Key Info  ·     Classes meet virtually on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. beginning Jan. 21, 2021. Find a full list of course dates here.  ·     Applications due Jan. 2, 2021   ·     Full scholarships available |

| Norma Jane Sabiston, a lifelong public servant and dear friend, passed away last week. During her many years on Capitol Hill, Norma Jane was a dynamic force who worked tirelessly to ensure citizens back home felt they were well-represented by congressional leaders. She was a model of humility, compassion, and respect in her service to the people of Louisiana. True to her giving spirit, Norma Jane also poured herself into mentoring other women in public service. Simply, it was an honor and privilege to know her.  NJ, your life’s work matters more than words could ever express. Thank you.  Read more on Norma Jane’s legacy here. - Charmaine |
