Benjamin Franklin High School’s STEM Clubs Partner with Local Initiative, TechNOLA, to Host BFHS Computer Science Education Week BFHS STEM clubs will host computer science activities and events to encourage more computer science education during the Computer Science Education week of Dec. 7-13 NEW ORLEANS (Dec. 7, 2020) – Benjamin Franklin High School’s STEM clubs have partnered with TechNOLA, a local computer science advocacy initiative, to create a BFHS Computer Science EducationWeek during Dec. 7-13. Our BFHS CSEdWeek will consist of different activities, challenges, and events for students, parents, and educators to take part in.
BFHS CSEdWeek Official Website “We spend much of our time online, but only a few of us really know how it all works,” says BFHS senior Amy Ndiaye, the president of the school’s Society of Women Engineers and one of the event’s main organizers. “Through our CS week, we seek to dismiss the myth that CS is unapproachable or unnecessary unless you want to become a programmer. Students should understand that coding is just a gateway into the larger world of computer science. Computer science is very important, and we are preparing students for our growing technological world.” BFHS junior Esenia Delgadillo, the robotics team outreach director, agrees: “This week is designed to make computer science more approachable and engaging for students of all ages, allowing them to get hands-on experience and learn about the vast world of computer science.”
Beginning Dec. 7 and running through Dec. 13, each day we will have an activity or challenge dedicated to CS education and advocacy. We will alternate between non-live virtual challenges and live virtual events. The non-live virtual challenges are open to the public for anyone to participate in. These challenges can be completed through a submission process found below, and participants can even win a prize! The live virtual events will be hosted through Zoom and will also be open to the public. Live events have a required registration form that can be accessed here. Here is the week’s schedule: Monday, Dec. 7 - CS Education Week Opening VideoTuesday, Dec. 8 - Non-live CS Poster Design ChallengeWednesday, Dec. 9 - Live Design Your Own Video Game ActivityThursday, Dec. 10 - Non-live Design Your Own Computer ChallengeFriday, Dec. 11 - Live Design Your Own Website ChallengeSaturday, Dec. 12 - Live Hack-a-thon Sunday, Dec. 13 - Live CS Webinar BFHS CSEdWeek Official WebsiteClick here to register for live activities!Click here to register for the webinar! Click here to visit FRC Team 4087’s website.Click here to visit BFHS SWENext’s website. Click here to visit TechNOLA’s website.
