NEW ORLEANS (March 29, 2019) – Benjamin Franklin High School senior Angel Williams is scheduled to sign with the University of Southern Mississippi in a ceremony at the high school, located at 2001 Leon C. Simon Drive, at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 1. Williams, who won the long jump at last year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic and this year came in second in long jump as well as 100-meter and 200-meter sprints (in which she achieved personal-best times), was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-State track team.

“Angel … well, what can I say? Little sis, workhorse, competitor, passionate, driven: All of them apply to Angel,” said her coach, K.C. Barbarin. “I’ve never seen a kid work so hard to reach their goals in life. We started Angel’s sophomore year with a plan to achieve a full ride to college, and three years later – Southern Miss, here she comes!”

The University of Southern Mississippi is located in Hattiesburg, Miss., and has almost 15,000 students. It counts among its famous alumni Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, football great Brett Favre, singer Jimmy Buffett, and Iron Chef Cat Cora – but for Williams, the most noteworthy might be Tori Bowie, a track and field star who won gold at the 2016 Olympics. Those are big (and fast) shoes to fill, but Barbarin knows Williams is up to the challenge and is already counting on her to do great things. “I’m so proud to have coached a future Olympian,” he says.
