[CharterSchools] Einstein Charter chooses new CEO

February 12, 2019             Tonight, a majority of the Einstein Charter School Board voted to select a new Chief Executive Officer and enter into employment negotiations with Mr. Michael McKenzie. 
A STATEMENT FROM THE EINSTEIN GROUP’S BOARD PRESIDENT DURRELL LAURENT:   For the past year, our School Board and school community has had to deal with a number of issues and opportunities as the New Orleans Public School Board unified all charter schools under one central office and highlighted changes they felt were necessary in Einstein’s operations.  While we are extremely proud of the strong academic progress of our students across our four campuses in grades PK through 11, we are always open to constructive challenges. In this context, this Board has been faced with tough decisions about our school's finances and leadership as we decide how we wish to enter the future taking the best possible course of action for our children. We are grateful for the manner in which interim CEO, Daniel Davis, stepped up to give us, the Board, an opportunity to explore how we could build on our school’s previous accomplishments while moving forward with renewed vision and purpose.  We presented four candidates to our community for the CEO position, and with the active input of our parents, students, and staff, we are excited to announce Michael McKenzie as the new CEO of Einstein Charter Schools.  We believe Michael’s innovative academic leadership in the University Charter School in Texas will complement the vision we have of Einstein’s future. We look forward to introducing him to New Orleans. After the Mardi Gras holidays, we will be announcing a series of meetings in which our parents, students, and staff will be able to meet with our new CEO. We are a strong, hands-on education community and these meetings will foster the open door policy our new CEO is committed to.          The Board wishes to thank all those who participated in helping us begin a new chapter for Einstein Charter Schools.    
About Michael McKenzie
 Mr. McKenzie is the Executive Principal for the Houston-region University of Texas-University Charter Schools. He previously served as School Leadership Coach of the Summer Principals Academy for Columbia University Teachers College in New Orleans and was the School Leadership Development Director for Southern Methodist University in Dallas. A former Special Ed teacher and Principal for Houston public schools, in New Orleans he served as a Transformation Principal for Sarah T. Reed High School and a Founding Leader for NET NOLA High School in the Louisiana Recovery School District. He holds a Masters of Education in Education Leadership and Management from Texas Southern University and is currently pursuing an Education Doctorate Degree from Columbia University Teachers College in New York City in Organizational Management with a concentration in Urban Education Leadership. He has 18 years of service in urban education and improving results in charter schools.
