Benjamin Franklin High School Welcomes Record High Number of Students
NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 31, 2018) – Benjamin Franklin High School kicked off the 2018-2019 school year on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, continuing its more than 60-year-old mission of preparing students of high academic potential to be successful in life. The school is now educating more students than ever before in its history.
The total student body now includes 1,002 students, 280 of whom are new to the school, including 240 ninth graders. Some classes are being held on the nearby University of New Orleans campus to accommodate the school’s growth.
“We are pleased and excited that Franklin's enrollment has reached an all-time high and that we are able to work with academically advanced and motivated students from every part of our city,” said Head of School Dr. Patrick Widhalm.
To be eligible for admission to Franklin, which serves grades 9 through 12 and accepts new students in all grade levels except 12th, students must be residents of Orleans Parish, score a total of 88 points (108 points for juniors) on an admissions matrix that includes test scores and grade point average, and have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all academic courses with no failing grades.
“The new students who entered Franklin as 9thgraders, 10thgraders, and juniors are an amazing amalgam of young people from 80 schools in 10 states, two foreign countries, and six Louisiana parishes who have moved to Orleans Parish,” said Director of Admissions Lynn Jenkins. “Their test scores skew toward the high end of the curve, and they represent a remarkable range of ethnicities, races, socioeconomic groups, and educational backgrounds. The feedback from teachers and staff is that they are kind, accepting, and a pleasure to teach.”
To meet the needs of the growing student population, Franklin has also hired seven faculty members – two in math; two in science; and one each in social studies, English, and music – and two new staff positons – a human resources director and a marketing and communications coordinator. It also moved its custodial crew from contract to staff.
Franklin will hold its Admissions Open House on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and all interested families are invited to attend. Applications will be accepted starting on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, and the first admissions test is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018. More details can be found on the school’s website at bfhsla.org/admissions.
