To all middle and highschool principals andscience, math and computer science teachers in Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes:
TEACHERWORKSHOP: To kick off the 2018-19 school year, Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair(GNOSEF) is hosting a free workshop for teachers and science fair coordinators on Saturday, Aug. 25, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Tulane University, Lindy Boggs Center, Room 104(building 15 on the Tulane campus map).
Presentations by experienced teachers will address finding opportunities and overcoming obstacles, while providing important information needed to participate in the GNOSEF. The workshop also helps them prepare for the63rd Annual GNOSEF to be held February 18th-21st, 2019 at Tulane University’s Lavin-Bernick Center.
Teachers are invited and strongly encouraged to attend the annual GNOSEF Teacher Workshop.There is no charge, but teachers must registerby Wednesday, August 22nd, as lunch will be served. Attendees will be awarded a certificate after the five-hour training session, which can be submitted to their school district for requesting CLU (Continuing Learning Unit) credits.
Hosted by H. Britton Sanderford, Jr., Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, Entergy Corporation, Paul and Patty Habeeb Muehlemann, and Tulane University, thefree, five-hour workshop, which includes lunch, will include an introduction to the GNOSEF plus the opportunity to attend informative sessions that allow participants to focus on important information for science fair success. Session topics for 2018 include:
Setting Up Your School Fair for Success! – Learn tips to make setting up and running your own school science fair a successful endeavor.
The Inquiry and Engineering Design Processes – Take a deep dive into these two processes and how they can be used by your students’ and in your classroom.
Basic Data Analysis and Statistics for Science Fair Projects – Help your students understand their experimental results and make their projects stronger by performing effective statistical analysis of data.
Students’ Research Plan and Writing Style – What should students include in their Research Plan and in their Research Paper?
>From the Judges’ Perspective – What are judges looking for, and what typically makes a project stand out to the judges?
The What, When and How of Required Forms – Get assistance with knowing what forms need to be submitted along with timelines, ISEF changes for 2019, and how to use the Box platform.
There will also be brief presentations on the timeline for participating in the GNOSEF, and an overview of the more than $60,000 in awards, prizes and grants for students, teachers and schools.
AFFILIATION WITH THEGNOSEF IS OPEN:Affiliation with theGNOSEF is now open with a deadline of October 8th. It is required for participating in the fair, but is not a commitment to do so. SAVE THE DATE! The Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) will be held on February 18th-21st, 2019. It is hosted by the Greater New Orleans Science Fair, Inc., a non-profit organization, and supported by local industry, foundations, universities and individuals who are committed to inspiring young people to pursue Science,Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.
TheGNOSEF encourages independent student research in science, technology, engineering and math. The Fair is open to students nominated by their middle or high school or home school association within the designated Region IX parishes (Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines). Entrants fall into two divisions: Junior Division is comprised of middle school students (6-8 grade) and Senior Division is high school students (9-12 grade). The deadline for project registration will be Monday, January 21st, 2019 so participating schools must have their fairs before that date. Schools may enter projects into theGNOSEF without hosting their own fair, but the same rules of 3 projects per category apply.
