Two sixth-grade students from Kenilworth Science and Technology School made a strong showing in the first Louisiana Regional SeaPerch competition, which featured student-built, underwater vehicles the students operate through remote control.

Nearly 60 middle school and high school competitors tested their skills at the competition, which was held at the C.B. Pennington Jr., YMCA on April 9. All students worked with their teachers to build the remote-operated vehicles from PVC pipe and electric circuit boards. The process of planning, building and operating the vehicles teaches students to work as a team and use critical thinking skills.

Kenilworth's middle school team of Altoris Jordan and Samuel Frith took second place in the Obstacle competition, which featured the students' ability to control the vehicle's thrust, buoyancy and ballast while negotiating an underwater obstacle course. Kenilworth also took third place in the Orbs competition, which tested the students' design and operating skills.

Kenilworth, a public charter school, was the only open-enrollment school from Baton Rouge to place in the competition.

Dr. Karen Fontenot, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University and a member of the Kenilworth school board, congratulated the two sixth-grade students and called them "ambassadors for educational excellence.

"Altoris and Jordan's accomplishment proves that students in open-enrollment schools can successfully compete at the highest levels," Dr. Fontenot said.

The Louisiana Regional SeaPerch Competition is hosted by the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education.
