Good afternoon, to our coalition in support of higher academic standards. A couple of important things to update you on and ask for your help.
1. On Tuesday BESE will be taking a very important vote with regard to transparency in our test results and knowing how our students stand compared to their peers in other states. It is critical that they vote to support the adoption of “cut scores” that will allow us to have the type of comparability across state lines that we have all advocated. If they don’t, we will be right back to where we were with the old LEAP test, where we can compare students in Bossier and Brusly, but not Louisiana and other states. We would ask that you send a note to your BESE member and ask them to support the superintendent’s recommendation to adopt the cut scores developed by the PARCC standard setting committee. A one-pager and a new CABL commentary are attached and they try to explain a little more with some simplified detail. Please feel free to share them both with anyone else who might be interested.
Only a short note and explanation are needed, but we need them to get a friendly note from as many of us as possible before Tuesday’s vote. You can access their BESE emails here: http://bese.louisiana.gov/about-bese/bese-members
2. For groups who work with parents, please share this information with them about some new resources the Dept. of Education has released to help parents prepare for the upcoming release of the 2014-2015 PARCC English and math test results. That’s expected to happen the week of November 9. It would be great if we could help parents be aware that this information is available, because there will be some things that are clearly different from what they are used to. I think our business partners, too, would be interested to see the type of information parents are getting,
The resources available include:
1. Parent Guide to PARCC Student Results: Guide to help parents read and interpret the PARCC student reports, with accompanying online resources
2. Sample ELA Student Report
3. Sample Math Student Report
If you have any questions, please let us know, and do hope you can assist us in reaching out to both BESE members and parents.
Best to all,
Barry
