Baton Rouge Area Chamber honors Kenilworth STEM teacher as one of the best
The Baton Rouge Area Chamber has honored Kenilworth Science and Technology School teacher Elkhan Akhundov as one of the top STEM educators in the Baton Rouge area.
Akhundov and four other teachers earned the

BRAC Excellent STEM Educator Award, a competitive award that recognizes public middle and high school teachers who demonstrate STEM excellence. Other honorees are Ingrid Cruz of Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Magnet Academy, Justin Davenport of West Feliciana High School, Daniel Eiland of Woodlawn High School and Heather Howle of West Feliciana Middle School. The winners were chosen by a subcommittee of BRAC's Education and Workforce Issue Council, which consists of area business leaders.
"Mr. Akhundov challenges students to think about STEM applications beyond the classroom, and he puts in the extra time and effort to bring lessons to life," said BRAC Director of Policy and Research Liz Smith. "BRAC is proud to honor Mr. Akhundov and Kenilworth, along with all of our winning teachers and schools."
Since joining Kenilworth in 2011, Akhundov has established partnerships with area college professors and grad students to give his middle school students an opportunity to work in university labs. He also encourages students to participate in regional, state and international science fair competitions, where at least 20 of his students have placed thus far. Akhundov coordinates live in-classroom conferences with NASA engineers, and he has led his students on a trek through a muddy southwest Louisiana rice field to retrieve a weather balloon full of scientific data.
Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
