Kenilworth student takes bronze in international competition
Ashton Fox of Kenilworth Science and Technology School receives a bronze medal in international competition
Kenilworth Science and Technology School student Ashton Fox has earned a bronze medal in an international science Olympiad for his science project on using nanoparticles, proteins and near-infrared light to kill cancer cells.
Ashton was one of only two students from the United States accepted to participate in the International Environment Sustainability Project Olympiad (INESPO) in The Netherlands. The eighth grader also was one of the youngest participants in the Olympiad, where he competed with students up to 18 years old in open competition.
"We are all incredibly proud and excited for Ashton," Kenilworth superintendent Tevfik Eski said. "He is an exceptional young man with a great future. Kenilworth is proud to have played a part in his academic development."
Ashton won a bronze medal on Thursday for studying the effects near-infrared light has on different gold nanoparticles. The research is important because, when gold nanonparticles are injected into the human body, they can be attached to a protein that will guide them to a cancer cell. Then, the gold nanoparticles and the cancer cells can be destroyed with near-infrared light, which has no harmful effects on surrounding, health tissue. Discovering which gold nanoparticles are most vulnerable to near-infrared light can lead researchers to find more effective ways to fight cancer.
Kenilworth science teacher Elkhan Akhundov, who recently was named one of Baton Rouge's top STEM teachers, accompanied Ashton and Ashton's parents to the competition. Akhundov said Ashton did his own research in learning how to procure the different nano-particles.
"He is a very bright young man, and to tell you the truth, I'm not sure I fully understand how he did this," Akhundov said.
This is the second consecutive year that a Kenilworth student has excelled at an international science competition. Last year, Jalen Scott was the only U.S. student invited to participate in the Golden Climate International Environmental Project Olympiad in Kenya, where he won the grand award.
Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
