>From Al Kennedy...

I have been working with Ms. Yamanaka in the Orleans Parish School Board Collection at UNO as she discovers new information about McDonogh 16 during the Reconstruction years. As part of her research she is planning to write a complete history of the school.

Please share this information with others who worked in the public schools of New Orleans. See her description and contact information below. Thanks, Al Kennedy

My name is Mishio Yamanaka and I am a history Ph.D. student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I am studying African American communities in post-Civil War New Orleans and their struggles to secure equal access to public accommodations. Related to my dissertation project, I am currently looking for persons who attended/taught at McDonogh No. 16 School during the 1960s and 70s.

Please let me explain my research. Since last year, I have launched the project titled, “The Fillmore School in 1877.” ( http://fillmoreschool.web.unc.edu) The Fillmore School was the predecessor of McDonogh No. 16.

The school was desegregated from 1871 to 1877. Fillmore was renamed McDonogh No. 16 in 1883, and for a long time, it served as a white school. In 1962, McDonogh No. 16 finally admitted African American children for the first time in the twentieth century. The school building was used as the New Orleans Center for the Education of Adults from 1978 to 2005.

I am trying to write a history of the Fillmore and McDonogh No. 16 schools; however, the lack of sufficient historical records, in particular during the 1960s and 70s, make my research difficult. If at all possible, I would like to meet and interview former McDonogh No.16 students and teachers. Any information would be very appreciated. Please contact me at yamanaka at live.unc.edu

Thank you,

Mishio
