Kenilworth to be highlighted with tour as part of National School Choice Week

The progress made at Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School over the past six years will be highlighted during a tour of the school later this week as part of National School Choice Week.
  
 
  
The Boone Drive charter is one of just four across Louisiana that will be spotlighted with a visit by officials from the Louisiana Federation of Children, Black Alliance for Educational Options and Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools to mark National School Choice Week.
  
 
  
“Kenilworth was a failing public school before it converted to a charter in 2009 and is now is one of the top open-enrollment middle schools in Baton Rouge,” says Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools Executive Director Caroline Roemer Shirley in a prepared statement.
  
 
  
The officials will visit Kenilworth on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Other Louisiana schools being spotlighted with tours this week are St. Benedict The Moor School in New Orleans, Lutheran High School in Metairie and Vision Academy in Monroe. Shirley says Kenilworth is a good example of how charter schools can impact not just students, but an entire community.
  
 
  
“Give educators the freedom to teach, and parents the power to choose, and amazing things can happen,” she says. “Kenilworth is a testament to that.”
  
 
  
Along with the school tours, more than a dozen other School Choice Week events are slated to take place across Baton Rouge this week as part of the national initiative. In total, more than 150 school choice events will take place across the state during the week.
  
 
  
According to the Louisiana Department of Education 2014-15 annual report on charter schools, there are 134 charter schools in the state with total enrollment just over 70,100.
