Kenilworth partners with Amerigroup, 100 Black Men for community-based Holiday Health Fair

Kenilworth Science and Technology School is partnering with Amerigroup Louisiana and 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge to host a Holiday Health Fair for Kenilworth students and their parents.

The fair will feature games, quizzes and prizes for students and free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings for parents. All activities will take place at Kenilworth, 7600 Boone Avenue, on Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

"Our goal is to nurture the entire student, which includes academics and promoting a healthy lifestyle," said Dr. Eugene Tevfik Eski, superintendent of Kenilworth. "We are proud to partner with 100 Black Men to improve the health of our students and their families."

Michael W. Victorian, president and chairman of the board of 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Ltd., pointed out that health and wellness is one of the organization's four focus areas, along with mentoring, education and economic development.

"Passive observance has never been the means of solving problems nor changing the attitudes of our community," Victorian said. "Intervention, active involvement and increased communication are staples of the health and wellness initiative."

The Holiday Health Fair is made possible by a grant from Amerigroup Louisiana. Other participants include HAART, the Southern University Agricultural, Research and Extension Center and the Louisiana Clean Fuels/Capital Region Planning Commission partnership.

Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.

The 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Ltd., is a non-profit organization through which African-American males step forward and assume roles of community leadership, responsibility and guidance. The organization serves as a catalyst to empower African-Americans to individually and collectively reach their full potential by maximizing the resources that foster and enhance achievement in education and economic and community development.
