Kenilworth starts year at maximum enrollment
For the third consecutive year, Kenilworth Science and Technology School has started a new school year at maximum enrollment, with 582 students in classrooms and another 249 students on a waiting list.

The official student count will be taken on October 1, but Thursday afternoon's enrollment of 582 middle school students already has Kenilworth at its academic capacity just four days after school began. The school's goal is to have an average of no more than 25 students in each classroom.
"We are committed to keeping a lower student-teacher ratio because research and our experience show that students learn better in smaller classrooms," Kenilworth superintendent Dr. Tevfik Eski said. "Right now, we are averaging about 26 students per class, and that ratio probably will change a little as everyone gets settled."
One reason the school consistently maintains a high enrollment is that 93 percent of last year's 6th- and 7th-grade students chose to return to Kenilworth this year. Dr. Eski attributes the high return rate to the partnership that develops between the school and the students' parents.
"Our parents are engaged in their children's school life, and we work hard to develop a strong bond between school and home," Dr. Eski explained.
Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
