LUSHER CHARTERSCHOOL TEACHER HONORED WITH 2015 LOUISIANA CULTURE AWARD FOR ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Lt. GovernorJay Dardenne and the Office of Cultural Development recognized Lusher CharterSchool teacher Brad Richard as the 2015 Louisiana Culture Award for “Artist ofthe Year” at the 2015 Louisiana Culture Awards reception held on April 14 atthe Capitol Park Museum. The ceremony was held in conjunction with CultureConnection, the annual conference of Louisiana’s culture stakeholders.
Mr. Richard isfounder and Chair of Lusher's Creative Writing Department and Co-Director ofthe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards/Southeast Louisiana Writing Region. He has published three collections ofpoetry and was the winner of the 2010 Washington Prize. His work has beenfeatured in numerous prestigious anthologies and journals. Mr. Richard has received many grantsand awards, including the Century Swept Brutal/Black Ocean Award in Excellence;a Louisiana Division of the Arts Artist Fellowship in Literature; the Poets& Writers, Inc., Writers Exchange Award in Poetry; and a Surdna FoundationArtist Teacher Fellowship. Mr.Richard is also a co-founder of the New Writers Literary Festival (LitFest) andThe Waves Reading Series.
“Lusher is incrediblyproud of Mr. Richard, as are his students!” said Lusher CEO KathyRiedlinger. “We are so lucky tohave the Artist of the Year as Chair of our Creative Writing Department. His talent, creativity and passion haveblossomed in every one of his pupils.”
At Lusher, Mr.Richard has guided twenty students from the creative writing program to receivescholarships to the Kenyon Review Young Writers Summer Workshop. He alsofounded street, Lusher’s high schoolliterary journal, which was awarded the highest award by the 2014 NationalCouncil of Teachers of English.
Students fromLusher's creative writing program have received recognition in many regionaland national competitions, including 2014 National Student Poet, MadeleineLeCesne; and 2008 Finalist, Presidential Scholar in the Arts program, TimothyClayton. Lusher students consistently sweep the Scholastic Writing Awards andLouisiana Writes awards. In addition, graduates of Lusher’s creative writingprogram have gone on to the nation’s most prestigious colleges and Master ofFine Arts programs in creative writing and have received national recognition,such as a Fellowship from the Cave Cahem Foundation.
17 LouisianaCulture Award recipients were honored at the event including three other awardwinners from New Orleans: Tipitina’s Foundation (Outstanding Arts Organization),Creole Wild West, (Folklife Heritage Award), and Irvin Mayfield (Lt. Governor’sPassion for Culture Award).
Each honoreehas made outstanding contributions to Louisiana’s culture. Winners wereselected in concert with the Louisiana State Arts Council, Louisiana Trust forHistoric Preservation, Louisiana Archaeological Survey and AntiquitiesCommission, Louisiana Folklife Commission, and Council for the Development ofFrench in Louisiana from public nominations earlier this year.
