Ben Franklin Teacher honored by OPSB, named High School Teacher of the Year




BenjaminFranklin High School teacher Dr. Sally Spahn is the theOrleans Parish School Board's 2014 High School Teacher of the Year. Dr. Spahn will also be honored at on Sunday, October 26 at the New OrleansSaints game versus the Green Bay Packers as the Chevron Teacher of the Week.

"Dr. Spahn has represented everything Ben Franklin High School stands forsince the moment she joined our school," said Principal Dr. Timothy Rusnak. "We are very proud that her hard work is beinghonored and know that she will continue to be a shining example to our kids andfor our school."


BACKGROUND: 
Sally grew up in New Orleans and attended LSU where she earned aB.S. in biochemistry. She was involved in medical research for seven years atthe LSU Medical Center in New Orleans before deciding to return to school.Sally intended to obtain a doctorate and pursue her own research. The graduate program in biology at Tulane required students to teachunderclassmen labs. It was here that she discovered her love for teaching. Starting in 1995, Sally taught as an adjunct professor atOur Lady of Holy Cross College and after graduating with a Ph. D. in AvianEcology in 1997, she taught at Tulane and UNO. In 1998, she moved to SouthBend, Indiana and began teaching at a 4-time blue ribbon high school, TrinitySchool at Greenlawn. It was here that Sally found her niche. She was invited to rewrite the junior high science curriculum, wasrecognized for excellence in teaching in 2000, and became Dean of Girls in2002. She became the Master Teacher for earth/space science, life science,biology, and chemistry, and thus mentored other teachers. In2007, she returned to New Orleans to teach at Our Lady of MountCarmel Academy. Desiring to serve students who could not afford privateeducation, Sally returned to UNO to obtain her Teaching certification in high school math, biology, and chemistry. She added physics to thecertificate in 2011 and became AP certified in physics by College Board in2012. Sally joined the Ben Franklin faculty in 2010 and has identified thisprofessional environment as second to none in her experience.





Benjamin Franklin High School, located on the University ofNew Orleans campus, was founded in 1957, its stated mission, to preparestudents of high academic achievement to be successful in life.  Franklinhas been consistently ranked as a “top public high school in the nation” byU.S. News and World Report, Newsweek, and Business Week magazines and hasreceived the highest School Performance Score in Louisiana, making it the #1public school in the state again this year.  Franklin is a National BlueRibbon School.
