Community Volunteer Event and Recycling Drive Sept. 27
NEW ORLEANS – Sept. 10, 2014 - USGBC Louisiana invites volunteers to participate in the thirdannual Green Apple Day of Service(GADS) on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9am-3pm.Helping hands will be needed at seven (7) schools and community centers acrossthe city, (1) site in Lafayette, and (1) site in Baton Rouge. This year, USGBCLouisiana has teamed up with Republic Services to offer a Community Recycling Drive at four (4) ofthe locations.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to offer this service to ourcommunity,” said Matt Hedrick, Construction Sales Representative for Allied/Republic Services.

Materials accepted at the recycling drive will be: standard commingle(plastic no. 1-7, paper, milk and juice cartons, aluminum/tin/steel cans),batteries, latex paint, electronics, and glass. New Orleans residents currentlyhave very limited options for recycling glass, which has been the case sinceHurricane Katrina.
“What better way to get information about the importance of wastereduction and recycling out into our community,” saidUSGBC Louisiana Chapter Coordinator Jolie Lemoine, referring to the newestaddition to the recycling drive roster: Hynes Charter Elementary School inLakeview. Third graders at Hynes- aka the “Recycling Rangers” - won theelementary division of last year’s Green Schools Challenge with a wastereduction outreach project. These students will be on hand Sept. 27 to helpcollect recyclables, hand out literature and talk to community members abouttheir project.
Green Apple Day of Service is an international volunteer service daylaunched by the US Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools, and sponsoredby Tchoup Industries. The service day is aimed at helping schools and communityorganizations work on service projects to improve their facilities, whileproviding a platform for outreach and community development.
