[CharterSchools] Franklin senior Yasmin Eriksson climbs Mount Baker, awarded $4000 for completion of Tulane University's Emerging Scholars

Benjamin Franklin senior Yasmin Barak Eriksson was named an emerging scholar in the Tulane University Emerging Scholars Environmental Health Sciences Academy this summer. She was awarded $4000 for her successful completion of the research program and her ownproject researching Plate-based Methods to Detect Menadione-induced Oxidative Stress in Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells with the support of her mentor, Dr. Jeffery Wickliffe.



“Emerging Scholars was an incredibly fun experience that has had a huge impact on me," said Eriksson. "From meeting young people who are as interested in science as me to learning more than anyone could in a typical classroom setting from brilliant mentors, the program has opened my mind to all the scientific field has to offer.”

Eriksson was also one of nine young women chosen nationally for the Girls on Ice Team whichexplored Mount Baker, an ice-covered volcano in the North Cascades of Washington State. The expedition spanned 12 days, during which time the women studied mountain glaciers and the alpine landscape through scientific field studies with professional glaciologists, ecologists, artists, and mountaineers.
