2014-2015 to Host a Free Teacher Workshop Saturday, September 6 at UNO’s Engineering Auditorium
Workshop to Support Efforts of Teachers/Principals who Promote STEM Education
NEW ORLEANS, La. (August 2014) – Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF,Inc.) is hosting a workshop for teachers, sciencecoordinators and principals on Saturday, September 6,9:00am – 2:00pm at UNO's Engineering Auditorium as a way to offerresources and information to highlight the impact of participationand help them prepare for the 59th Annual Greater NewOrleans Science and Engineering Fair to be held February 24-26,2015 at UNO.
Hosted by the GreaterNew Orleans Science and Engineering Fair, Tulane University, University of NewOrleans, Core Element, Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), American PetroleumInstitute (API) and the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, the five-hour workshop,which includes a lunch break, will cover such topics as: availableteacher resources; a look at science fairs from a judge’s viewpoint; submittingprojects online; a gallery review of past projects; grants and awards; whattakes place at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF); and how tohost your own school fair. The workshop will conclude with an open question& answer session.
"This workshop isour way of supporting educators in their efforts to promote STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering & Math), in general, and science andengineering fairs, specifically, which have an impact on a child'seducation, their future career goals and the economic growth of ourcommunity," said Annette Oertling, Ph. D., fair director of the GreaterNew Orleans Science and Engineering Fair.
GNOSEF encourages independent studentresearch in science, technology, engineering and math. The Fair is open to any studentnominated by their middle or high school within the designated parishes(Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles and Plaquemines). Entrants fall into twodivisions: Junior Division is comprised of middle school students (6-8 grade)and Senior Division is high school students (9-12 grade).
Among the numerouscategory and special awards to be presented at GNOSEF 2015, four (4) GrandAward winners, Senior Division only, will be selected from the First &Second Place Winners in each category and will represent Region IX in the InternationalScience and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburgh, PA, May 10-15, 2015.Additionally, two (2) teachers will also be awarded a trip toISEF. Eligible finalists ineach division (Junior and Senior) will be certified for entry in the LouisianaState Science Fair (LSEF) on March 23-24, 2015 (registration deadlineMarch 6) at LSU in Baton Rouge.
More than $50,000 incash/non-cash awards, prizes and grants will be awarded to GNOSEF 2014-2015winners/teachers and schools, including a trip for 4 students and 2 teachers toISEF, which draws over 1600 students from 70 countries with more than $4million in cash awards and prizes.
The non-profit GreaterNew Orleans Science Fair, Inc. is supported by local industries, foundationsand individuals, including major donors H. Britton Sanderford, Jr. and thePatrick F. Taylor Foundation.
