November 6, 2014
News Release
All middle school students in public, private, charter or home schools in Louisiana are invited to participate in the 2015 Louisiana STEM Expo , hosted by Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School in Baton Rouge on Feb. 28, 2015.
The theme of the 2015 expo is "Homegrown STEM in Louisiana." The expo, an innovative alternative to traditional science fairs, will include demonstrations, games and robotics from students across Louisiana. Interested students can register for free at www.lastemexpo.org. STEM is the common acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Dr. Isiah Warner, an LSU Boyd professor of chemistry and the university's Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives, will be the keynote speaker at the expo. Dr. Warner is a Louisiana native whose boyhood love of science led him to remarkable career that has included more than 300 published works and dozens of national and international awards. Dr. Warner has six patents and is considered one of the world's leading experts in analytical spectroscopy. Learn more about Dr. Warner from this biographical video.

"It is critical that we nurture that sense of curiosity and discovery that lies in so many of our young people," Dr. Warner said. "We need more events like the Louisiana STEM Expo to provide encouragement, guidance and mentorship for students."
Participating students can compete in the areas of chemistry, life sciences, physics, math or technology and will work with their teachers and/or mentors to prepare a demonstration to present at the expo. Presenters will be judged by university and industry volunteers, and the winners and their teachers will receive prizes. Kenilworth is again inviting industry partners, non-profits, local museums, higher education institutions and federal and state agencies to participate as exhibitors or sponsors.
Last year's expo attracted more than 500 participants from across the state. Last year's expo sponsors included The Mosaic Company, the U.S. Navy and the Louisiana Board of Regents. Partners include the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, LSU-Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), the Louisiana Chemical Association, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, LSU- College of Human Science and Education, Black Alliance for Educational Options and the LSU Cain Center.
Sponsorships and partnerships for the 2015 expo also are available. For more information, visit www.lastemexpo.org.
