If you have lived in NewOrleans a long time, you might pass the old Rabouin building on CarondeletStreet and assume it is business as usual in the old 1935 art-deco building. But it isn’t.
Anew charter school took over that property in 2010 and has been honored for itsquiet clean-up and repurposing of the structure into aninternationally-recognized high school.
The Downtown Development District of New Orleans(DDD), during its 2014 Downtown NOLA Awards, honored the International HighSchool of New Orleans with the “Best Kept Secret” Award, given to a Downtown"gem" that is low profile, but deserves recognition for its programs, services or amenities, said Director Kurt Weigel.
TheDowntown NOLA Awards were created as an annual program to recognize exceptionalaccomplishments of Downtown NOLA property owners, businesses, residents, workers and organizations.
“We are proud to receive this award and to be acknowledged for our contributionto the vitality of downtown New Orleans,” said Interim Head of School Nan Ryan. Since occupying thebuilding, the school community has conducted an extensive cleaning of thebuilding, restored the floors, and created a thriving educational environment.
“But our parents and students don’t want to be thebest kept secret in the city. We want to be the best neighbor a community couldhave!” said Ms. Ryan.
TheInternational High School of New Orleans is Louisiana’s only open enrollmentpublic high school to offer French and Spanish immersion programs. The worldlanguage program at IHS includes Spanish, French, Mandarin and Arabic courses.
A full college preparatory curriculum iscomplemented by an Authorized International Baccalaureate Programme, AdvancedPlacement and Bard Dual Enrollment courses.
The charter’s board recently selected Sean Wilson asthe school’s new headmaster.
