New Orleans, LA – Nine students in grades 4-7 were specially selected to perform for Michelle Obama at the White House this coming Tuesday, May 20th at 2:30 PM. The students attend ReNEW Cultural Arts Academy, an arts integration school in Uptown, New Orleans, where they learn to incorporate arts and education into their lives. The students were chosen after an intensive workshop with Ms. Alfre Woodard, who has been working with the students as an artist in residence for two years.

RCAA is one of nine schools across the country selected by the President’s Arts & Humanities Committee to participate in the turnaround arts initiative. By providing intensive professional development and in kind donations, PCAH enables RCAA to reach out of the traditional realm of turnaround school work and dive deeper into the arts as a means to improving the school environment and academic results.

This is RCAA's second year as part of the Turnaround Arts initiative, which will culminate in a performance at the White House for Michelle Obama with Alfre Woodard and Trombone Shorty.

“The arts bring me energy,” says Raphael, a 4th grader at RCAA. He’s excited to be going to perform in front of the First Lady, but nervous just the same. He was afraid to forget his lines, but has since been practicing and feels more confident.

Seventh grader Angela Russell is excited as well. She feels that the influence of arts education has been good for her as a musician and a student. “The arts have improved my grades, math to be specific. It used to be my worst subject, but you have to use it in music, and now I am on the top of the list.”
