Top 10 Parental Involvement Tips for 2014-2015 school year
With the start of the 2014-2015 schoolyear just weeks away, this is an ideal time for parents to develop a strategyfor involvement with their child’s education. “While it is an important part ofthe equation, parental involvement goes beyond visiting the school’s campus,”said Val Marshall, a parent and board member with the New Beginnings SchoolsFoundation.
“These tips will help parents create aplan that allows them to become involved with their child’s education in ameaningful way,” said Marshall.
1. Talk to your child about the importance of education.
2. Keep your child’s records up to date,including vaccination and other medical records, as well as up-to-date parentalcontact information.
3. Read to and with your child, and haveyour child read to you daily.
4. Check your child’s book bag each morningto ensure they are not unknowingly bringing prohibited items to school.
5. Ask your child about their school day,including homework assignments and any issues or concerns they may have.
6. Meet with your child’s teachers regularlyto monitor progress. Most schools have scheduled orientation sessions andparent conferences.
7. Become familiar with school lunch menusand discuss any concerns with the school leaders.
8. Become familiar with high schoolgraduation requirements well before your child’s senior year.
9. Learn about available sports and otherextracurricular activities.
10. Become familiar with preparing your child for life after high school,including career preparedness, and application for college scholarships andfinancial aid.
New Beginnings Schools Foundation schools open on Wednesday, August 6,2014 (grades 1-12) and Wednesday, August 13, 2014 (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten).
