Top museums, universities support 2015 LA STEM Expo
Dec. 16, 2014
News Release
Some of Louisiana's most prestigious groups, including the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, are joining the 2015 Louisiana STEM Expo, which will be held at Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School in Baton Rouge on February 28.
The expo is a showcase for Louisiana middle school students to exhibit demonstrations, games and robotics in the areas of chemistry, life sciences, physics, math or technology. The students are judged by university and industry volunteers, and the winners and their teachers will receive prizes. Already, dozens of students from schools in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas have registered for the event. Students in grades 5-8 can still register for free at www.lastemexpo.org. STEM is the common acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Other sponsoring and exhibiting groups that have joined the 2015 expo include Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Biological Science, LSU Division of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Lafayette Science Museum, Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital, Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute, Pennington Biomedical Research Center and many others. Businesses, non-profit groups, local museums, higher education institutions and federal and state agencies can still participate as an exhibitor or sponsor by visiting www.lastemexpo.org.
"We already have more exhibitors and partners signed up this year than in any other year," said Dr. Tevfik Eski, superintendent of Kenilworth. "The educational and business communities in Louisiana are highly aware of the importance of STEM in the classroom and in the workplace, and the expo is a great place to show support for STEM education."
Last year's expo attracted hundreds of participants from across the state. The theme of the 2015 expo is "Homegrown STEM in Louisiana." Dr. Isiah Warner, an LSU Boyd professor of chemistry and the university's Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives, will be the keynote speaker at the expo.
Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
