Mayor-elect Mitch Landrieu
Andre Perry, an associate dean at the University of New Orleans and
president of a local charter school network, and Sophie B. Wright Charter School
Principal Sharon Clark will lead a 21-member task force to advise Mayor-elect
Mitch Landrieu on education issues.
Landrieu introduced the task force members during an afternoon news
conference at Sophie B. Wright Charter School in Uptown. It also includes officials
at traditional public and private schools, the president of the local
teachers' union, community leaders and representatives of teacher-training
programs.
State schools Superintendent Paul Pastorek and Recovery School District
Superintendent Paul Vallas also are advising the group, Landrieu said.
Though New Orleans mayor has no official responsibility for the city's
schools, Landrieu listed schools among the top three priorities of his campaign,
on par with reducing crime and creating well-paying jobs.
"You can't grow jobs if the city's not safe, and you can't grow jobs if you
don't have an educated workforce," he said. "Even though I don't have
direct control over the schools, I do have a responsibility to make sure
everything is working together ... toward the common good."
Landrieu said he has asked the task force to advise him on what the mayor
should do to improve education in New Orleans. More immediately, he said he
wants recommendations on how the city can best position itself to secure
federal Race to the Top grants, as well as how a lump-sum payment from FEMA for
the repair of school buildings should be spent.
In the long term, Landrieu said he want the committee to consider how
charter schools work with public and private schools, as well as how and when the
governance of New Orleans public schools, many of which are under state
control, should be transferred to local officials.
