Sci High Students to hold “Pick Up Your Peace”
Anti-Violence Youth Summit March 28
WHO: “Pick Up Your Peace” Anti-Violence Youth Summit organized
by the students at New Orleans Charter Science and
Math High School
WHAT: Saturday, March 28th
Summit is Noon-6:30 pm with a
Community Feast and Festival from 6:30-9pm
WHERE: New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School ‘Sci High”
5625 Loyola Ave (at Nashville) IN UPTOWN NOLA
WHY: “Pick Up Your Peace,” is an Anti-violence Youth Summit organized
by three students and teacher Ann Wootton of the New Orleans Charter Science
and Math High School after attending the Children’s Defense Fund’s “Cradle to
Prison Pipeline Summit” last fall. The students returned determined to
organize their own event. “Pick Up Your Peace” is for youth/by youth and will
showcase some of NOLA’s rising young leaders participating in community building
workshops, roundtable discussions, and hip-hop, spoken word, and brass band
performances. Musician Shamarr Allen will be the keynote speaker and students will
perform spoken word pieces throughout the summit, culminating in a large
community celebration with free food, music and entertainment (Truth Universal,
Dee-1 and the Double Duchesses). A student exhibition of a “Community Photo
Project”, will be featured with photos included in the student-produced “Pick Up
Your Peace Zine,” given out to all participants. The students will also
raffle various items to raise money for a local women and children’s shelter.
The Summit is co-sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee and
participants include: the Children’s Defense Fund; the Juvenile Justice Project;
and the Community Justice Clinic at Loyola Law School. The event is free and

2nd Annual Warren Easton Festival
Proceeds to benefit Easton School Based Health Center
WHO: Warren Easton Senior High School
WHAT: The festivities will include giant inflatable slides and a Kid's Area;
music by Easton’s Marching Band, Terrence Jones & Dimensions and DJ Aktright;
food such as fried and boiled seafood, hamburgers, hot dogs, and desserts; an
"Eagle Idol" student-singing competition; Easton spirit dance groups paying
tribute to the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s; and recognition ceremonies for
"Octogenarian Eagles" and recently slain student India Mahoney. The Hornets Bookmobile
and the Blood Center bus will also be at the Fest. Admission is $5, children
12 and under may enter for free.
WHEN: Saturday, March 28, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Easton Park, 600 N. Lopez in MidCITY NOLA
WHY: Proceeds will benefit the Warren Ea ston School Based Health Center

International School Hosts 5th Annual Refrigerator Art Auction
Original artwork by “Be Nice or Leave” artist highlights this spring's
coolest fundraiser
WHO: The International School of Louisiana (ISL)
WHAT: New Orleans folk artist Dr Bob, known for20his “Be Nice or Leave”
signs, and ceramicist Jennifer Schumacher Waller will have pieces auctioned off
for ISL’s Fifth Annual Refrigerator Art Auction. Advance tickets are $60.00
each ($100.00 at the door) and include live music, food, wine and beer. Patron
Level tickets ($125) include a Patron Party beginning at 6 PM with additional
live music, advance viewing of all auction items and signed and numbered pieces
to the first 150 Patron Level guests. The menu for the event will be
coordinated by John Harris, ISL parent and award-winning chef of Lilette, and
the evening's entertainers will include the Bucktown All-Stars, Eggyolk
Jubilee and the Davis Rogan Trio. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased
online at http://www.isl-edu.org.
WHEN: Sunday, March 29, 7- 10 p.m. (Patron Party begins at 6 p.m.)
WHERE: The Foundry, 333 St. Joseph St.
WHY: Event proceeds will support arts programs at ISL, a public charter
school providing a multi-lingual education in French and Spanish.
The Refrigerator Art Auction is presented in association with sponsors New
Orleans Magazine, St. Charles Avenue Magazine, The Foundry, Middendorf's and
Katfish Home Improvements.
