NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans saw more growth in charter school enrollment than 
any other city in America last year, according to a new report by the National 
Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
Public charter school student enrollment in Orleans Parish for the 2007-08 
school year accounted for 55 percent of all public school students, up 21 
percent since the previous year.
“Public charter schools are increasing in popularity among parents and 
students both nationally and in New Orleans,” said Nelson Smith, president and CEO 
of the alliance. “Their popularity is a result of high-quality public charter 
schools helping students, many coming from under-privileged backgrounds, to 
achieve academic success.”
The number of communities across the nation with 20 percent or more of public 
school students enrolled in charter schools has grown from six to 12 in the 
past two years, according to the report. A total of 64 communities now have at 
least 10 percent of students enrolled in public charter schools.
Second to New Orleans is Washington, D.C., enrolling 31 percent of public 
school students in public charter schools. Nationally, more than 1.4 million 
students are enrolled in more than 4,600 public charter schools in 40 states and
